New Apple Invents Combined 2D/3D Display; Concept Features Gaze-Tracking And Multiple Image Views Capabilities

Apple is looking for a new approach to provide 2D and 3D images from the same display without requiring any special visible apparatus like 3D glasses.  The display system is set to use gaze-tracking in order to output particular images to the viewers and is intended to be capable of displayinh multiple image views from a single screen at the same time.

In one display, Apple's new idea proposes to employ multiple layers to display specific and adjust the output down to the pixel level. The overlays will combine LCD matrix pixel mask, lenses, along with the layers in order to provide specific and differing output to a viewer's left or right eye. Along with it, a built-in image sensor will also be used in order to track the eye position of the viewers. Gaze-tracking technology has already been introduced to market allowing things like on-screen control.

Aside from that, the layers and sensors also allows viewing different images by multiple viewers at the same time.  This allows the user to do the type of dual-screen gaming which Sony has already offered with its 3D gaming display. Although Sony's 3D technology still requires one to use active shutter 3D glasses.

iPad-like graphics is also proposed in this technology's new patent application, improving the regular experience in watching movies or playing games a more special one. If the user then prefers 2D images temporarily, Apple's invention also offers a setting which disables the 3D gaze detection features. This option is believed to be readily available for instances which only require 2D display like reading.

Apple's new concept of a spatially interactive 2D/3D displays is only one of the two new patent applications that were published by the US Patent and Trademark office this week. The other one involves the redesigning of a more effective and accessible cellular hotspot.
