China defends reclamation of islands in the South China Sea
During the top security forum held last weekend, officials and representatives from different countries tackled the growing concern over China's reclamation of islands in the South China Sea. United States senator John McCain refused to abide by the 12-nautical mile zone and said that doing so would be "de facto recognition of Chinese sovereignty." China's spokesperson, Admiral Sun Jianguo, however, insisted that the reclamation of islands were based on "legal and historical evidence" and that its sole purpose is to improve the living conditions of the people stationed in the area.
