American Airlines are set to offer new access to Cancun, Mexico when it adds new service from four U.S. cities in 2016. The new seasonal service to Cancun International Airport (CUN) will operate on Saturdays from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Kansas City International Airport (MCI).  

As of March 5, 2016, passengers from Pittsburgh (PIT), Nashville (BNA), Kansas City (MCI), and Raleigh-Durham (RDU) can enjoy non-stop flights to Cancun. The aircraft will provide the direct flights as a Saturday-only service from each of the four cities, as reported by USA Today. The flight from Kanas City will feature a Boeing 737 while the other three will arrive via Airbus 319.

All four flights are scheduled for a 7:00 a.m. departure. Passengers have to spend about an hour on the ground in Cancun, and then make the return trip. American anticipates beginning to sell tickets in mid-November, with the new routes still facing formal approval from regulators.

Art Torno, senior vice president of American Airlines, trumpeted the carrier's strength in Cancun and in the Latin American region: "The addition of these four new routes gives our customers 12 locations to fly non-stop to Cancun," Torno mentioned in a statement via American Airlines Newsroom. He continued by stating, "As the premier carrier to Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America with flights to 85 destinations, these additions highlight our commitment to providing our customers with a network that is second to none."

The move purportedly represents an interesting advancement for the airline company, which, jointly with now-integrated US Airways. Today, however, the airline offers few non-stop options from the airports. American will now rely on local traffic to support these new flights, without the flow of connecting passengers from elsewhere across the country contributing to fill the flights.

According to Airways News, the four new routes also makes American Airlines in direct competition with other airline companies, including Delta Air Lines, which maintains its nonstop flights to Cancun. Delta similarly runs Saturday-only non-stop flights on three of the four new routes introduced by American, also serving Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh-Durham.

In the meantime, frequent travelers now think that other vacationers will now take Cancun as a getaway choice because of the few more options of nonstop flights offered by airline companies. And as a result of American's new additions, travelers in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Raleigh-Durham may now accessibly travel to Cancun.
