Desert Fun in UAE: Sand boarding and skiing getting popular in Abu Dhabi

By Staff Writer

Sand boarding and sandskiing take on a whole new meaning on the Abu Dhabi's desert dunes. Boasting the world's largest dunes, towering hundreds of meters above the surrounding plains, the Liwa Oasis on the edges of the Rub al-Khali or Empty Quarter is now recognized as a sand boarder and skier's paradise.

According to Fly Abu Dhabi,  the dunes surrounding Abu Dhabi stretch almost 300m, making it perfect for  sand boarding or sand surfing. For beginners, there are plenty of gentler slopes for them  to pick up on the basics. The best time to sand board is in the early morning, where surfers can appreciate the warm winds and a breathtaking view of the sun rising over the golden dunes.

Sand boarding enthusiasts are found all throughout the world. It is also becoming popular in desert regions, including the UAE and Dubai because of their desert regions. Due to the cost of building a mechanized lift on sand dunes, most borders only take the option to walk to the top of the dune after every run or take a ride on a dune buggy back to the top. All throughout the year, up-side dunes are usually accessible in comparison to other snow sports, as claimed by Desert Safari Abu Dhabi Tour.

Moreover, boasting the world's largest dunes, towering hundreds of meters above the surrounding plains, the Liwa Oasis on the edges of the Rub al-Khali or Empty Quarter is a sand skier's paradise, as mentioned in Visit Abu Dhabi. Many sand boarders ride on their sand board and trip down the seemingly endless red sand slopes for an invigorating experience. For novice skiers taking the 300 meter Liwa dunes, skiing down gentler slopes across the Abu Dhabi desert is the best start.

In the meantime, a word of caution from experience sand skiers, desert temperatures will be quite high during the day, so beginners should aim for the dunes in the early morning. Additionally, they should also wear light clothes, sunglasses and a hat to protect themselves from the scorching sun, and perhaps use lots of sunscreen.
