Toyota unveils the ultimate Toyota 86 GRMN racing car

By Staff Writer

Toyota's Japanese motorsports division Gazoo Racing Meister of Nürburgring (GRMN) has unveiled Toyota 86 GRMN, a concept racing version of the automaker's sports car. The concept will be shown at the 40th Nürburgring 24 hour race in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, in May 2016.

The Toyota 86 GRMN is a special edition based on the rear-drive sports coupe, Autoblog reported. Dubbed as the "Ultimate 86", the GRMN 86 features both a turbocharger and a scroll supercharger to offer up to 320 horsepower and 310 pound-feet or 421 Nm of Torque.

Toyota 86 GRMN  concept features a number of aero upgrades, including a large rear wing and front splitter. The 86 GRMN  uses carbon-fibre reinforce plastic (CFRP) for its hood, bonnet, trunk, and rear wing for weight saving purposes. It also uses a lightweight resin to replace the glass bits.

According to Paultan, the 86 GRMN  design is 1.8 times stiffer than the base model, the Toyota 86 GT Limited. The 86 GRMN  scales at 1,230 kg, 20 kg less than the unchanged Toyota 86 GT Limited. The car has longer dimension at 4,290 mm with five millimetre increase in the front track and five millimetre decrease at the rear.

The 86 GRMN's engine features new intake and exhaust system with low friction internal components. The car is powered by a redesignated  FA20 2.0 litre boxer four cylinder engine, the FA20-GR. The redesigned engine includes new lightweight pistons, low tension piston rings and low friction crank bearings. It has a centre mounted muffler with variable valve that runs at 4,000 rotation per minute.

The engine provides an output of 219 PS at 7,300 rotation per minute and 217 Nm at 5,200 rotation per minute. The power is sent through a six-speed manual gearbox and to the rear wheels via a Torsen limited slip differential. The car is also fitted with six-piston monoblock brake calipers at front, with four-piston ones at the rear.

GRMN fit the Toyota 86 with wheels that still measure 17 inches across at each corner, but are 8 inches wide at the back instead of 7 inches all around. The car uses specially developed Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R tyres fitted on RAYS forged lightweight aluminium wheels.

According to Tune 86, Toyota 86 GRMN's interior includes bucket seats, four-point seat belts, and a roll cage. It also offers back skin tone interior and additional meters including boost gauge, water temperature gauge, and oil temperature gauge.

Toyota will only offer 100 of the GRMN 86 examples exclusively in Japan. The car will be priced at 6,480,000 yen or nearly $54,000.
