Samsung launches Gear VR, a peek into virtual reality world

Tech-oriented companies are in a race of adding spice to their ideas of introducing different gadgets. Playing 2D and 3D games are common nowadays, but the actual feeling of being present in a virtual world is somewhat more interesting.

According to Daily Mail, recently, Samsung has launched the first major consumer-oriented virtual-reality headset, Gear VR headset, which lets you feel the aura of virtual worlds through multiple videos and games.

However, some of the materials provided by the headset are quite unprofessional and clumsy, but VR has enabled the people to enjoy some mind-mind-expanding experiences. The cheap price of the gadget has made it extra demanding as it just cost $100. But the price is without headphones, preferably wireless, plus a recent Samsung phone - the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus or Note 5. The full package costs nearly $1,000.

Samsung introduced the Gear VR with the virtual-reality startup Oculus (now part of Facebook). Previously for a year, it has sold its 'innovator edition' worth $200. The model aimed to build enthusiasm for VR and to motivate the developers to start working on games and apps for it.

In order to use Gear VR, the consumer has to insert a Samsung Smartphone into it, to watch the video on the screen, According to New York Times. Next year, the launch of other virtual reality handsets is anticipated which includes, Microsoft's HoloLens and Sony's PlayStation VR.

The gear VR, which is a work in progress, is no doubt a fascinating experience and is considered quite different from previous consumer technology device. However, it also comes with some disadvantages as the video put a strain on the eyes and extra weight can make the neck sore if used for a longer period of time. And it takes some time to get used to it as a person while wearing the headgear is unable to see it properly at first.

The headset has a body of cheap plastic, with two adhesive straps attached, one horizontal and the other vertical. The right side of the device contains a touchpad for swiping through menus or selecting items. A small wheel situated near a forehead is used to adjust the focus. There is special software for the Gear VR to work, downloaded through a special app that serves only apps and games developed for virtual reality.

As mentioned by Mashable, Gear VR made a business on Amazon and BestBuy.com, within two weeks of its launch. Samsung has also released a Gear VR commercial that seems like stepping into next-gen mainstream entertainment.

"Virtual reality is a new experience for many, and there is a natural acclimation process," the companies said in a statement. "As you use VR more, it becomes more comfortable for longer periods of time."

The commercial uses a tagline, "virtual reality just got real," that shows the Gear VR's ability to display everything from games to movies, to immersive video.
