Google Collaborates with Levi's to Create Interactive Textile Capable of Simple Gestures for Users

By Staff Writer

Google and Levi's work together in planning for wearable technology and to create touch-sensitive clothing or interactive textile that can perform simple gestures for its wearer. Jacquard team leads the planning and they want to revolutionize clothing into something more useful and advance.

According to Google's Advanced Technology And Projects (ATAP), Project Jacquard will work more on improving the functions of the normal clothing without changing the looks and style of the clothes. Ivan Poupyrev from Google, explained that the wire will be weaved on the textile at the same time they will work on developing a special yarn that suits their project.

It is now possible to have your clothes do the tapping or swiping of your phone when someone sends you text messages or call during busy hours. This is the power of interactive textile. Jacquard is an old term referring to an ancient weaving technique that uses metallic alloys and organic and artificial yarns from cotton or silk.

On Friday, the Google and Levi's reveal its plan on working together for "smart" pants. During the Google's I/o conference Paul Dillinger, head of global product innovation said, that people nowadays is having a hard time in balancing their physical presence while keeping a connection with the digital world.

The two giants decided to address this concern by producing a yarn that has sensors on it and can switch on anytime. They want to produce interactive clothes. He also added that Google will not create different norm for clothing style instead they are the one who will adapt on the current fashion.

Clothes will not just for body protection but an interactive textile device that is far better than other wearable devices. It's another innovation for the clothing and textile industry where clothes can be as high tech as your smart phones. It's probably the most exciting thing to look forward from Google and Levi's in the near future. So far, no exact timeline has been provided by the two companies regarding the Project Jaguar.
