Apple's Jeff Williams On Cars: "It's The Ultimate Mobile Device," Hints Company's Plans To Take On Automotive Industry

By Staff Writer

Apple's senior vice president, Jeff Williams, hinted in a recent interview during the Code Conference on Wednesday that the company might venture into the automotive industry. He shared that the car is the ultimate mobile device and that their company explores all kinds of categories.

Given the fact that Apple has been a tech giant in terms of developing phones, players, watches, tablets, and computers, the company might be on their way to take it up a notch. According to Re/Code, Jeff Williams was interviewed on stage and a member of the audience asked how Apple plans to use their money, which is already approaching $200 billion.

The senior vice president shared that Apple already has CarPlay, an infotainment system showing what are the contents of a driver's iPhone is in the dashboard, and shared that huge carmakers such as Ford, General Motors, and Hyundai have expressed their willingness to include Apple's app into new models they will be making in the coming years.

Financial Times also reported that aside from the app that Apple came up with, the company also has a secret team of automotive engineers and designers that are reportedly working on an electric vehicle. Williams did not comment on this rumor but his response to the audience's question was taken as a hint that there is a huge possibility such vehicle is in the works.

Apple's CEO, Time Cook, did reveal in 2013 that they are still working on the wearable technology and a year after, the Apple Watch was released. Speaking of the Apple Watch, Williams shared that the sales for the gadget has been fantastic as of date and that the Apple conference to be held next month will be showing the device's capability of heart rate monitor and other related sensors.

Apple is also expected to talk about the much-awaited Apple TV and the "grand vision" for television this coming June.
